Dec 17, 2004  Shipping was about $22. Listed as new by Directron and they were not. Boston Acoustics only sells through authorized dealers (Gateway for pc audio) and Directron is not an authorized dealer. When mine quit working 3 months after purchase (no audio) Boston Acoustics offered to fix them and would not honor the warranty which Directron indicated. The user for cleaning or any other purpose, may exclude the reference to unplugging the product in the cleaning description otherwise required in above 5). We ran a pink noise test through the BA7900, and took a pressure level measurement using a CEL 254 pressure level meter positioned at head-level, about two feet away from the center channel and were immediately impressed. With the volume control opened up about 75% full, the BA7900 was putting out around 105dB SPL (sound pressure level), which indicates an efficient design in terms of getting output from the speaker drivers. However, we had to push these speakers’ volume setting pretty hard, up to around “three o’clock,” to get to desired louder listening levels on our music DVD movie, and game audio tests.

Music Listening Tests

For our music listening tests we used the following material:

Horowitz in Moscow, Vladimir Horowitz (Live classical piano concert). All-digital recording of one the great piano masters performing a wide variety of material, both subtle and percussive.

Bach: The Goldberg Variations, Glenn Gould (classical piano studio recording, made in 1990) Another great piano master captured interpreting Bach as only he can. This material is excellent for testing transient response.

All for You, Diana Krall Trio (studio recording of jazz vocalist with trio) This selection is chosen to gauge accurate vocal reproduction.

Time Remembered, John McLaughlin, (studio recording of acoustic guitar choir) An excellent test to gauge transient response in speakers.

Tales from the Hudson, Michael Brecker (studio jazz recording) Recent outing from tenor sax shaman that we include to gauge instrumental reproduction.

Pieces of Africa, Kronos Quartet (world/classical) A good combination of legato and percussive playing from this string quartet, along with African percussion.

Kiko, Los Lobos (pop, studio recording) Similar to the Robert Cray selection, this album’s hard-driving percussion, and its more subtle instrumentation push both the subwoofer, and demand accurate reproduction from the satellites.

Quanta Live, Gilberto Gil. (Live concert recording). Varied Brazilian musical styles that contains many percussion instrument details that can be lost on lesser speakers.

Midnight Stroll, Robert Cray (pop blues) Hard-driving rhythm section, coupled with Cray’s vocals and signature Telecaster guitar, this recording seeks to push subwoofers to the limit.

We did our listening tests in a 2.1 channel mode, so we could assess stereo imaging in addition to other aspects of speaker performance.

Overall, the BA7900 handled this set of test material very well, delivering both excellent clarity and plenty of clean bass response. The BA7900 delivers high-end clarity without the midrange and high frequencies sounding too “hot,” something that has annoyed us about Klipsch’s ProMedia series of speakers. This clarity was readily apparent in the classical and jazz recordings, and on the John McLaughlin selections where each guitar player’s attack was rendered with good detail.

On more intense material, the BA7900 didn’t waver, and the percussion in the Kronos Quartet selections came through strongly, both with good bass response and good clarity. We didn’t have to push the volume control as hard to get to loud (but comfortable) listening levels with our music listening tests, however, the DVD Movie tests were a different story.

DVD Movie/Game Audio Listening Tests

We tested using the following material:

Dolby Digital Test DVD, Dolby Digital cinematic trailers

The Fifth Element, opening credits, and Chapter 28

Gladiator (in DTS), Opening battle sequence and 15

Steely Dan’s Two Against Nature (in DTS)

Twister, Chapter 9

Games

MVP Baseball 2003
UT 2003

We found here that the BA7900’s ability to produce loud listening levels was highly dependent on the test material being played. But in nearly all DVD cinematic material, we had to push the volume control to around “three o’clock,” or about 60% full open. On some material we went to about 75% full open to get to strong, loud listening levels.

Despite the need to push the amplifier pretty hard to get to louder listening levels, the overall sound quality was solid, and we never heard the bass unit go into distortion. During explosion sounds, the subwoofer port was pumping out so much air it almost became a fan.

Dialogue was clear in the center channel, and movie soundtrack music was not found wanting.

Boston Acoustics has never quite gotten its due as a PC speaker maker. Despite some solid offerings, including probably the best set of speakers 60 bucks could ever buy, the BA-635, Boston Acoustics never quite seemed to get the foothold it was looking for in the PC speaker market.

Today, Boston’s speaker sets are available only through Gateway, as this PC maker has an exclusive arrangement to sell Boston’s PC wares with Gateway systems. The latest member of that lineup is Boston’s 5.1 BA7900, whose $240 price tag takes it into the fray against Creative’s MegaWorks 550 THX (~$190 street) and Logitech’s Z-680 (~$260 street). Boston’s BA7900 has neither the total wattage nor the THX seal of approval that grace Logitech’s and Creative’s 5.1 offerings, but what it lacks in specsmanship, it more than makes up for in sound quality.

The BA7900 subwoofer uses an eight-inch down-firing woofer in a vented enclosure, and the subwoofer is rated down to 35Hz. The front and rear satellites and center channel speaker use a Boston-designed, magnetically shielded 3″ driver, also in a ported enclosure. The BA7900 packs 345 watts of amplification, with 150 watts going to the subwoofer and each of the five satellites getting 39 watts.

The BA7900 includes a freestanding control pod, which features four front-mounted rotary controls: master volume, center channel level, surround level, and subwoofer level. In addition, the BA7900’s control pod has both headphone and microphone jacks, but you can optionally route the microphone jack to your sound card’s line input so you can easily connect an MP3 player or any other line-level device into your PC.

The center channel’s angle adjuster works well, allowing you to set the speaker’s projection angle depending on whether it’s on your desktop or atop your monitor.
